The composer writes : This work was premièred on April 27, 2003 at the Eglise Saint-Roch in Paris with the prestigious Orchestre de la Musique de LâArmée de LâAir, under the direction of my friend and colleague, Claude Picheraureau. I have always been fascinated by the beauty of the Cosmos, which has inspired many of my works. Feelings of infinite movement can be expressed musically and it seemed to me that one of the ways to do this was to end this work on a repeated phrase played in a long perdendosi, to give the impression that one is hearing the echoes of the finished phrase as the instruments stop playing. I had just started to write this work when I received a note for the Paris Observatory which gave me the news that the astronomical community had decided to name a newly discovered asteroid for Jean-Pierre Luminet. When I wrote to Jean-Pierre to congratulate him on this honour, reminding him with the Petit Prince that not everyone has their own star, I asked him if he would accept that I name this work for concert band with the full name of his asteroid: 5523 Luminet 1991 PH8. Jean-Pierre accepted my proposition by return letter : ..., not only do I not have any objection, but I would be very honoured. To be in the celestial spheres in the form of a rock and also in the form of music, what more could one ask for? Starting from James Pierpontâs classic holiday song, this piece is a irreverental set of five variations which present the well-known in several unusual contexts: an exotic dance in a South American style, a Yiddish Waltz, a burlesque number which features a quartet of soloists. After a much more tame âChorale-Préludeâ, the fughetta on the verse (âDashing Through the Snowâ) leads to a finial exposition of the theme in a Toccata style. In the late 1990s, a score was found in Germaine Tailleferreâs papers with the title page âChoral et Fugue pour orchestre dâharmonieâ and a dedication âà L'Harmonie Municipale de Lyonâ. The pages which followed contained the score of âChoralâ for organ with optional brass and âFugueâ for orchestra. When the late composer Desiré Dondeyne was consulted concerning this score, he confirmed that this work had been projected, but refused to say anything further on the subject. Research was undertaken to try to locate a scale in the municipal archives of the City of Lyons (as the Municipal Band no longer exists) but proved to be unsucessful. It is unclear whether or not Tailleferre intended to undertake this work herself or if she intended to entrust it (as she often did) to Dondeyne. In any case, it would appear that the concert band version for this work was probably never completed. Paul Wehage, a longtime scholar of the works of Tailleferre, has undertaken the orchestration of this work The Fugue movement remains close to Tailleferreâs original version for orchestra. The choral section is entirely rescored. During the course of my studies in Paris, I was amazed to discover that Debussy planned over 50 theatrical works but only finished two of these entirely by himself (the opera Pelléas et Mélisande in 18931902 and the ballet Jeux for Diaghilevs Ballets Russes in 191213). Of the rest, many were never started musically (like Siddartha and Orphée-roi with the Oriental scholar Victor Segalen, 1907); some had a few tantalising sketches (like the Edgar Allan Poe opera Le Diable dans le beffroi, 190203); some were half-finished (like his other Poe opera La Chute de la Maison Usher, 190817); while others were musically complete but had their orchestrations completed by other composers (like Khamma, by Charles Koechlin, 191213; or Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien and La Boîte à joujoux by his angel of corrections [lange des Corrections] André Caplet in 1911 and 1919 respectively).<br> <br> For it has to be admitted that what some scholars call Debussys compulsive achievement could equally well be viewed as laziness, especially as far as the minute detail required for calligraphing his orchestral scores was concerned. It was as if creating the music itself was of greater importance than controlling its final sound, even if Debussy was an imaginative orchestrator when he found the time and energy to do it. It also seems true that Debussy also preferred inventing ideas to turning them into complete pieces. However, despite the lack of detail in many of his sketches (missing clefs, key signatures, dynamics, phrasing, etc.) the notes themselves are surprisingly accurate, whether or not they can be compared with a later draft. Thus, a large number of sketches exist for his Chinese ballet No-ja-li ou Le Palais du Silence and it is not too difficult to see which parts of Georges de Feures 1913 scenario (see below) inspired which ideas. But Debussy hardly made any attempt to join them together after the first few bars.<br> <br> It was usually up to his publisher, Jacques Durand, to find solutions when Debussy risked a breach of contract. Debussy was supposed to supervise the orchestrations completed by others, but this supervision was usually very light and restricted to quiet, sensitive moments in which problems were easier to spot. Far from jealously guarding every one of his created notes, as Ravel did, Debussy once even went as far as to ask Koechlin to write a ballet for him that he would sign on 26 March 1914 when he was hard-pressed to fulfil his lucrative contract for No-ja-li with André Charlot at the Alhambra Theatre in London. In the end, Debussy (through Durand) sent Charlot the symphonic suite Printemps instead, whose orchestration had been completed by Henri Busser in the Spring of 1912.<br> <br> So, when I was offered early retirement as Professor of Music at Liverpool University in 2004, I seized the opportunity it would give me to spend time trying to reconstruct some of Debussys lost potential masterpieces from his existing sketches and draftsthen orchestrating them in Debussys style when this was appropriate. I had begun this mission in 2001 with the most promising project, the missing parts of Scene 2 of La Chute de la Maison Usher and the sheer joy it gave me at every stage persuaded me to tackle other projects, especially when Debussy experts were unable to identify exactly where I took over from Debussy (and vice versa) in Usher.

Scored for 21EH22/2200/timp/1perc/hp/strings Parts on rental.<br> <br> Debussys friendship with the versatile poet and playwright Gabriel Mourey began in 1899, and in July 1907, Mourey offered Debussy a libretto based on Le roman de Tristan - Joesph Bédiers adaptation of a twelfth-century Breton romance by the Anglo-Norman poet known as Tomas - which had recently been published in Paris. Debussy enthusiastically outline the four-act plot to Victor Segalen that October, and the main differences from Wagners Tristan und Isolde are that none of the action takes place in Cornwal and that Isolde of the white hands is found guilty of cuckolding King Marc with Tristan, who has to rescue her from the leper colony in which she is abandoned in Act 1. She also betrays hi when he goes mad at the end.<br> <br> The idea of a Tristan that restorced its legendary character and had no connections with Wagner, appealed to Debussy, who was extremely moved by the circumstances of Tristans death. Even if he thought that Moureys poetry was not very lyrical and many passages do not exactly invite music, he did work on the libretto and the music that summer and sent his pubisher Jacques Durand, one of the 363 themes for the Roman de Tristan in a letter sent from Pourville on 23 August, 1907. The present prelude grows from this theme, together with the poignant Breton folksong Le Faucon. After a short atmospheric introduction, Debussys dance-like theme (which is definitely not a leitmotif) gradually gains momentum and after it reaches it ecstatic climas, representing the transient happiness of the lovers, it dissolves into an expressive coda and an elegiac close (all growing from Debussys opennning, off-stage trumpet calls), leaving us with the ultimate tragedy of their ill-fated advice.<br> <br> Unforunately, Moureys actual libretto has been lost and the project eventually foundered because Bédiers cousin, Louis Artus, wanted Debussy to use the scenario he had prepared and copyrights for the stage, and would not allow him to proceed with Moureys version. I owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the celebrated pianist Nicolas Horvath for enthusiastically
bringing my Debussy works to public attention in their solo piano formats, both through his recent
recitals across France and through this Naxos Grand Piano release (GP822). In some cases these are
true piano pieces (like Toomai des éléphants), in others they are piano reductions of orchestral scores
(like Fêtes galantes), while in others they are piano solos in their own right that also exist in orchestral
versions (as in the incidental music for Le Roi Lear). Needless to say, most of these tracks are world
première recordings, and this is certainly true of A Night in the House of Usher and its companion piece Un Jour affreux avec Le Diable dans le beffroi (?A Dreadful Day with the Devil in the Belfry?) which I arranged specially for Nicolas in November 2018 as a virtuosic, almost Lisztian paraphrase-fantasy. To remind us of the plot as the dramatic scenes unfold, Un Jour affreux avec le Diable dans le beffroi, like the start of No-ja-li) has a narrator (spoken in French by Florient Azoulay on the Grand Piano recording):
[After an overture rising from the underworld, with a polka and a citation of a chldren?s folksong Savez vous plantez les choux?, a carillon rings out]: Hearing it, the Dutch villagers start to count, with the bells of the belfry / 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 8, 9, 11, and 12 / Perfect! / 13!?!/ The bell rang 13 times / 13! / The Devil is here where the clock should be! / Damn! / The bells are cracked. / The Devil laughs fit to burst / He pulls from the pocket of his coat, a small dancing master?s violin / ?My God!? says the devil ? and he tunes his violin slowly / The Devil leads the villagers in a fantastic and relentless jig [making jokes at the expense of concertos by Beethoven, Brahms and Tchaikovsky] / The Devil directs the villagers towards the canal ? where he jumps to the other side, laughing all the time / The villagers try to imitate him, but they fall into the water. / [In Part 2] the villagers are transported to a hedonistic and lively Italian village. They are similarly transformed: the men have crooked hats ? the women have wide open bodices! They dance a mad Tarantella / 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 13 / shouting ?Hey there! (Hola?) / Jean, the young hero, makes a fervent prayer to God against the Devil / The prayer is answered and the bell again rings normally! / The expression of the Devil changes: he shudders! / Everything goes black / The devil disappears in a brief red glow ? / And the carillon and the bells chime as usual / 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 / Perfect! / But the Devil?s grinning face ap-

Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533668). Planctus (2005) for solo viola is dedicated to Alexandra Green, on her birthday. Planctus (noun, Latin) â Medieval style of song and poetry of a lamenting character. They were sung both in Latin and in the vernacular (common language), treated both religious and secular subjects, and were popular throughout Europe. The work is cast in song form. Like later examples of the âplanctusâ, the work becomes not truly a âlamentâ, but a more general song. The same rubato and musicality that is used in playing the unaccompanied cello suites of J. S. Bach should be applied to this piece. Always singing, always lyrical, always flexible, always keeping in mind the different voices and harmonies (implied and stated) occurring in the music.

This Concerto, composed in the 60s for the French Radio, was never performed and it was rumoured that Tailleferre, always trusting with her performers, had given the score to a visiting Guitarist from South America in the hopes that it would be performed there. Tailleferre personally considered this work to be on of her strongest and regretted that it was never performed during her lifetime. Her description of the work motivated several musicologists and guitarists to spend many hours searching for the work in music archives and libraries. The missing score was finally located during the Fall of 2003. A musician visiting the French Radio was intrigued however by a new addition to the catalogue and it was quickly confirmed that this was indeed the missing manuscript that so manmusicologists and guitarists had been looking for all of these years. The work is in four movements and is scored for 2011/1000 tymp/harp/celesta/strings and lasts aproximately 17 minutes. The work is more in the style of a concerto grosso than that of a virtuosic concerto, with the guitars frequently used in a solo group with the harp and celesta, which adds a very interesting orchestral colour. The writing is varied, ranging from a medieval cantilène style in the slow movement to free atonal sections in the second Scherzo movement and in the first movement. The work ends in a movement which sounds influenced by South American Popular music. Inspite of this apparent stylistic disparity, the composition remains extremely coherent and shows a great deal of energy and a kind of poetic strangeness. This item is the full score. The parts are on rental from the publisher. A piano reduction and the solo parts are available for sale.

Written for Paul Wehage for the 1997 Donne in Musica Festival in Fiuggi, Italy, this work uses elements of Cuban folk music. Doris Magaly Ruiz Lastres was born in Santa Clara, Cuba, in 1941 . In 1981 she graduated with a degree in Composition from the Instituto Superior de Arte de La Habana, where she studied with Harold Gramatges, CÃsar PÃrez Sentenat, Josà ArdÃvol, FÃlix Guerrero, Alfredo Diez Nieto, Dolores Torres and Roberto Valera. Since then, she has worked as a Professor at the Instituto as well as at the Instituto Superior Pedagógico Enrique Josà Varona and the provincial school of music, Amadeo Roldán. She has been worked for many years as technical advisor of the subject Harmony in the Dirección Nacional de Enseñanza ArtÃstica, and technical advisor in the Centro para la Investigación y Desarrollo de la Música Cubana. Her curriculum is published in prestigious dictionaries such as The Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and «Diccionario Iberoamericano de la Música». Several of her compositions are included as part of the curriculum of the leading music education institutions in Cuba, among them, the Conservatorio Amadeo Roldán, the Instituto Superior de Arte de La Habana, the Instituto Superior Pedagógico Enrique Josà Varona and Conservatorio Alejandro Garcia Caturla. Her compositions have been performed at many festivals such as the International Musical Festival, Festival de La Habana, Festival Boleros de Oro, International Festival of Contemporary Music, the International Festival Donne in Musica in Fiuggi, Italy and the Festival Sounds of Americas, New York, United States. She has received the First Award in the music contests Concurso La Edad de Oro, Concurso de la Dirección Nacional de Enseñanza ArtÃstica, Concurso Amadeo Roldán and the Concurso de la Unión Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba. She has also been awarded several medals and honours, among them The Medalla por la Educación Cubana, Medalla al MÃrito Pedagógico, Medalla Josà Tey, Distinción Especial of the Cuban Ministry of Education, and the Premio Anual de Composición of the Unión Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba for lifetime achievement.

The Aria with 30 variations which form the work which is known as the « Goldberg » variations is one of the greatest works of Bach. It is his only work which uses the form of variations and through three series of ten variations each, it explores a myriad of musical genres and styles. The initial Aria, which seems to be rather trite and banal at the beginning of the work, is magnified through these transformations and the da capo at the end brings us back to the beginning, which has been changed by the musical journey itself. As a sort of musical « initiation », it has become a work which sparks the imagination and which creates an atmosphere all itâs own. The story of how the work came to be written has to come to us through Bachâs first biographer, Johann Nikolaus Forkel in 1805, seventy-five years after the death of Bach. It would seem that a certain Count Keyserlingk, the Russian Ambassador to the Court of Dresden, had difficulty sleeping and asked Bach to compose a work which his protégé, a harpsichord virtuoso by the name of Goldberg, could play in a salon near his bedroom to help him sleep in the evening. For this commission, Bach was to receive the largest fee of his life, a hundred louis dâor in a golden goblet. It would seem that this story is perhaps more of a legend than anything else, as no goblet was found in Bachâs estate at the end of his life and no documented proof of this story has been found. Goldberg was indeed a student of C. P. E Bach, Bachâs son and the son might have asked his father to write these works for his brilliant student. No manuscript for the Goldberg Variations exists, only a first edition corrected in the hand of Bach which contains certain tempo indications and other markings. The first edition also carried the following title: « Clavierübung, consisting of an Aria with diverse variations for the Harpsichord with two manuals composed for music lovers to refresh their spirits by J. S. Bach ». In this version for Saxophone Quartet, it is important to remember that Bach was writing for the harpsichord and not for the Piano-forte. Bach did indeed know of the Piano-forte and played one of the first instruments produced, but it would seem that he did not care much for this new instrument. To find something akin to the precise, clearly defined attacks of the harpsichord, precise articulation and clarity of sound must be the first priority. In general, even in the slowest movements, the attacks must take precedent over all other elements of performance. If the need for clarity of line and precision of attack is respected, the inherent musicality contained in the work should be evident, even in this new form.. As Bach himself transcribed many of his own works and those of others, I would like to hope that he would find this question to be interesting and the results to be surprising...
